Living Legend [AUDIO/2003.11.13]

☆☆

Scott Gray brings his unique Doctor Who Magazine comic sensibilities to Big Finish, and the result is quite marvelous. In fact, if I were to rank the four initial Big Finish one-part freebies, this would firmly be in second place, just behind the incredible The Ratings War.

There's nothing quite like the run of stories from Storm Warning to Neverland, and the boundlessly fun and vaguely romantic energy that the era carries. There's also nothing quite like the unique early-2000s atmosphere of the DWM Eighth Doctor comic scripts, which Gray was an integral part of. The marriage of the two is Living Legend, in which Paul McGann and India Fisher have a relaxing time off as the Doctor and Charley defeat an alien invasion during the World Cup season in Italy by pretending to be Time Lords (the Doctor being Charley's subordinate, naturally) and tricking the alien captain into thinking he's been infected by 'World Cup Virus (going mental and hugging one another)'. What else do I need to say? It's a 30-minute adventure that's full of careless fun and joy, and since it's totally free on the Big Finish website, there's no excuse not to listen to it!

I have a soft spot for these Eighth Doctor audio adventures that were released between Neverland and Zagreus. Both Shada and Living Legend are precious catch-your-breath stories before stuff hits the fan, a final warm embrace for everyone who's loved Eight and Charley so far. These two were certainly precious to me back when I was first going through the Eighth Doctor audios in order  I remember taking breaks from the Divergent Universe stories and popping on either this or Shada, just so I could remind myself of the Eighth Doctor that loved his existence and his friends.
