Max Warp [AUDIO/2008.2.?]

★☆

It's always fun when Doctor Who makes an affectionate/scathing parody of something popular; this particular installment has the double advantage of being written by the incredible Jonathan Morris and being based on one of the most riffable television shows out there, Top Gear. That's right, folks; if you've always wanted to see what it would be like if Jeremy Clarkson whined about women and liberals and had it in for Richard Hammond (leading to a not-so-subtle parallel to that one accident the Hamster was in), look no further than Max Warp.

Now this is what I'd call Doctor Who as pure, unshackled fun. The hour just whizzes by as Paul McGann and Sheridan Smith run around the place, her Lucie being paranoid and hilarious and his Doctor being a lovable and nosy know-it-all. Every member of the cast seems to know by heart how this script is all clever laughs and matches its energy effortlessly; it's like professional actors enacting ridiculously fun scenarios on a playground, and the tone is infectious. Characteristic for a story Morris pens, the laughs are quick and fast and the revelations are exciting. This is basically an outer-space Top Gear murder mystery written by Agatha Christie, and you'll have one heck of a time.

From the parodical guitar riffs to the believable and hilarious presenters, Max Warp is geared (pun intended) to entertain its audience and it succeeds in flying colours. It's one of those easy-going and exciting stories you'll pick up every so often after a binge of heavy, dramatic or scary slices of Doctor Who. If you're a Top Gear fan and not so much one of Doctor Who, I have just the starter piece for you...
