The Time of My Life [COMIC/2008.8.21]

★☆

What is it about short form Doctor Who stories and their overall high quality? Perhaps it's because there's less need to make a structured narrative, meaning writers can get away with practically anything on the top of their head. The wildest ideas, the most creative one-line synopses... and if there's one writer who can come up with the most delightful ideas of them all, it's Jonathan Morris. It's practically a treasure trove we have before us, considering that each page amounts to a separate story, a snapshot into the DoctorDonna lifestyle. Eight beautifully illustrated pages from eight different, completely out-there adventures  who could resist?

Morris cleverly links each page with ending sentences, breathing a sense of continuity to all the crazy proceedings. Mind-boggling astral spectacles, running away from Goth vampires, confronting sentient dogs hellbent on overthrowing their human masters, escaping from killer aliens inside Donna's most embarrassing past memories... there's nothing quite like watching the Tenth Doctor and Donna running around on their amazing adventures. They were always the golden duo of the Russell T Davies era, their chemistry off the charts and both almost always being served the best by writers. It's only fitting that this wonderful companion is given such a sweet goodbye in the comic realm, showing viewers of the New Series all the things the two have been up to off-screen, and all that Donna will never be able to remember now. The final panel is heartbreaking.

Twice as effective if read a few days after a watch of The Stolen Earth / Journey's End, The Time of My Life is an exciting, imaginative and touching coda for the character of Donna Noble. I can imagine myself picking this up every so often — every page of this thing is bursting at the seams with imagination, and of course I do so love ripping my heart out on a regular basis...
