Echoes of Extinction [AUDIO/2021.4.16]

★★★☆☆

Yeah, well, if you're looking for some multi-Doctor goodness with Eight interacting with Ten, Ten interacting Eight and both interacting with some other surprise return or what have you, think again. This isn't your typical multi-Doctor adventure, and I'd say that's a good thing since it allows the Tenth Doctor to reflect on his past lives by looking at his past self, this past self who has so much coming for him without his even knowing it. As always, both Paul McGann and David Tennant are at their A-game. I would argue that they don't get an awful lot to do around here, but that's not really on them and they give their all for the script.

Is Echoes of Extinction anything to be excited about? Well, if you've got an hour to spare for something that's not the most special thing in the universe. If you're a plothead, there's a sentient network that's branded a dangerous weapon hiding inside a couple of minds, its world is subsequently wrecked, and the Doctors are here, one at a time, to save the day. Truth be told, I probably enjoyed this more than most; I just get a giddy thrill whenever I see a release that's willing to play a bit with structure (you can basically listen to this adventure in 8-10 order or 10-8). It's also a pleasure to hear Arthur Darvill and Burn Gorman in one story, one where they don't play their usual Dr. Who universe characters. You would never guess Gorman is here, though; the Network's voice is so distorted and shrouded to the point where identification is near impossible. Odd creative decision, but I'm into it. I enjoyed Echoes of Extinction this second time around, and it's a good hour to sink your teeth into.
